He's a leader of the "hard Brexit" faction in Parliament, which wants Britain to leave the EU single market and customs union in order to forge new economic relationships.

Hammond's remarks earned him a stiff rebuke from May's office who, wary of the need to keep senior Brexiteers happy, said the changes Britain was planning to undergo could not be described as "very modest".

"So instead of doing what we're normally doing in the trade negotiations - taking two divergent economies with low levels of trade and trying to bring them closer together to enhance that trade - we are taking two completely interconnected and aligned economies with high levels of trade between them, and selectively, moving them, hopefully very modestly, apart".

"This is no way to negotiate and it is no way for this country to behave", Rees-Mogg said in a speech on Thursday. He argued: "The British people did not vote for that".

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Hammond said the United Kingdom was not seeking an "off-the-shelf" model to replace its membership of the EU single market and customs union.

On Wednesday, a lawmaker from May's Conservative Party, Jacob Rees-Mogg, accused Davis of allowing Britain to become a "vassal state" of the European Union by paying into the bloc and adhering to its laws during transition.

Nevertheless, the plan to change little of the current relationship after Britain formally leaves on March 29, 2019, is fuelling anger among Brexit campaigners, who fear their mantra of "taking back control" is being sold out.

Former Conservative MP and Scottish secretary Lord Forsyth told the BBC's Question Time that the prime minister "needs to get a grip on the cabinet and the cabinet needs to get behind her".

I can't get fair hearing, 'bully' police chief Phil Gormley says
Mr Flanagan told a committee of MSPs that Mr Matheson had told him that it would be a "bad decision" to bring Mr Gormley back.

"The Government's policy is that we are leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union", said a Downing Street source. One said: "Hammond was spot on and the prime minister should be supporting her chancellor not giving in to an unrepresentative ideologically driven minority". They did not vote for the management of decline.

Rees-Mogg is seeking to pressure the government as it begins negotiating future relations with the EU.

"Of course maintaining access to each other's markets on current terms means we will replicate the effects of the EU customs union during the implementation period".

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Duncan Smith said: "I'm a little bit puzzled about the Chancellor's intervention though".

Rees-Mogg was elected as the new chair of the ERG after the previous incumbent, Suella Fernandes, was given a government post in this month's reshuffle.

The Eurosceptic backbencher said in a speech that "close alignment" with the European Union after Brexit would be unacceptable.

The EU set out its demands on Wednesday, and Davis is also expected to make Britain's demands in the speech. And we will be able to do so much more with them, when we are an independent trading nation, outside of the EU.

Rees-Mogg argued that would make Britain "be a vassal of the European Union", bound by its rules but with no say in making them.
