Ren-G gives Rugby World Cup a taste of 'kawaii' culture

Described as mythical, lion-like creatures that "bring happiness and ward off evil", "Ren" and "G" - together known as "Ren-G" - were unveiled Friday as the tournament's official mascots.

White-haired father Ren and red-headed son G, collectively named Ren-G, take their names from "Renjishi", a classic Kabuki play about a lion and its cub.

"Kawaii" cuteness meets traditional Japanese culture in the official mascot design for the Japan-hosted 2019 Rugby World Cup, unveiled on January 26 at Tokyo's historic Meiji Kinenkan hall.

The winning design was chosen from around 50 entries and similar depictions are seen throughout Japanese culture. Ren is the parent, and G is the offspring.
