Exports jumped 11.8 percent to 78.29 trillion yen, reflecting an increase in Asia-bound shipments to a record-high value, while imports surged 14.0 percent to 75.30 trillion yen, according to preliminary data by the Finance Ministry.

Japan's trade surplus dropped 25.1 percent previous year as higher energy bills eclipsed some of the revenue from robust exports of electronics-related goods and automobiles, government data showed Wednesday.

Eleven countries aiming to forge an Asia-Pacific trade pact after the United States pulled out of an earlier version are set to sign an agreement in Chile in March, a big win for Tokyo which is pushing for multilateral rather than bilateral trade frameworks. Imports were also up by 14%, due to higher oil and coal prices.

Exports rose 6.8 percent to ¥15.11 trillion and imports gained 10.3 percent to ¥8.08 trillion. US President Trump is demanding that Japan have more balanced trade with his country.

Japan marked its second successive year of black ink in 2017, booking a trade surplus of 2.99 trillion yen (27.11 billion US dollars), the finance ministry also said.

Exports to the region gained 15.7 percent to a record ¥42.93 trillion, while imports rose 11.4 percent to ¥36.99 trillion.

Policymakers hope robust external demand for Japanese goods can help stoke a virtuous cycle of business investment, consumer spending and growth in Japan's economy, the world's third largest.

Japan's trade surplus with the United States fell an annual 1.0 percent in December to 712 billion yen, posting the first decline in six months.

In December, Japan reported a trade surplus for a seventh straight month at ¥359 billion, though it was 43.5 percent less than a year earlier as the value of imports rose more than exports.

The figures were measured on a customs-cleared basis.
