The countdown continues to the latest edition of rugby's showpiece event with New Zealand set to defend their title in the first-ever Asian World Cup.

The 2019 World Cup in Japan is a little over 18 months away and officials have revealed the mascots for that tournament, "Ren" and "G".

The mascots, named "Ren" and 'G, ' were unveiled on Friday by local organisers and similar depictions often appear in traditional Japanese theatre.

"Ren", with a white mane, is the parent of child "G", whose mane is red, and the pair bounced up and down, trading high-fives and passing a rugby ball back and forth at a press conference in Tokyo. "It took about two years to develop its concept", said Akira Shimazu, CEO of the organizing committee.

Rob Abernethy, the general manger of the Japan World Cup, says the winning entry was whittled down from about 50.

"The story behind our mascots will create connections, a bond between the Japanese people, rugby and its value", he said.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup will be the first hosted in Asia, and the first to have a mascot since 1999, when it was principally hosted by Wales and other surrounding countries also became venues.
