Japan's top envoy Taro Kono lands in Beijing aiming to improve strained ties
The National Museum of Territory and Sovereignty displays replicas of historic documents that Japan says show its ownership of two sets of uninhabited islands, one also claimed by China and the other by South Korea.
While meeting with Li, Kono will invite him to visit Japan for a trilateral summit with South Korea.
The dispute with China has heated up in recent years, with Chinese coast guard ships sailing near the islands and their Japanese counterparts trying to chase them away. The dispute escalated particularly after the administration of former Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda, Abe's predecessor, made a decision to purchase most of the islands from the private Japanese owner and effectively put them under state control in 2012 to prevent former Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, an outspoken nationalist, from buying them.
For years, Tokyo and Beijing have been mired in a territorial row over the Senkakus, called Diaoyu in China.
South Korea denounced the opening of the museum and demanded that Japan shut it down.

"The Diaoyu Islands and their affiliated islets have been China's inherent territory since ancient times".
"We are strongly dissatisfied with what the Japan has done, and I want to emphasise that nothing can change the fact that Diaoyu belongs to China", foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular press briefing. "China is firmly determined to safeguard its sovereignty over the islands", Hua said. Kono is likely to bring up the topic during talks on Sunday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, State Councillor Yang Jiechi, the country's top diplomat, and a member of its senior leadership.
Japan has been hoping to arrange reciprocal visits by the two nations' leaders, though China is less enthusiastic about the proposal.
The two sides are also expected to discuss the North Korean nuclear issue.
