Joe Mc Knight was killed in a road rage incident
Gasser, 56, a Gretna telecommunications contractor, was on his way from work when he was cut off by Joe McKnight - who according to witnesses was driving recklessly on the road.
Then-Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Norman said at the time that "relative statutes" and "forward-leaning laws" that favored people standing their ground allowed authorities not to immediately charge Gasser. Responding to the defense allegations that McKnight drove in high speed weaving through the traffic and cutting Gasser and others off on the road, assistant district attorney Seth Shute said, "We do not dispute that he was driving like a jerk".
Though Gasser had been charged with second-degree murder, the jury returned a lesser verdict of manslaughter with a 10-2 vote. Gasser was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting, which he claimed was in self-defense.
"Ronald Gasser lured him out of his auto and shot him", Shute said.
Gasser told detectives he shot McKnight three times since he feared for his life, saying McKnight was lunging into his auto.
Gasser never disputed that he shot McKnight on December 1, 2016.

Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc. (SNI) Position Increased by Bank of Montreal Can
James Investment Research Inc. acquired a new stake in Scripps Networks Interactive during the first quarter worth about $147,000. The company reported $1.05 earnings per share for the quarter, beating the Thomson Reuters' consensus estimate of $0.96 by $0.09.
The case triggered protests after police initially released Gasser - who didn't flee from the shooting scene - after more than eight hours of questioning, and led some to question whether race had played a role in his release.
"What happened on that bridge was a challenge", Shute said.
He pointed to testimony from a forensic pathologist that the bullet wound in McKnight's right shoulder indicated his arm wasn't raised at the time.
Based on the position of the bullet wounds, the evidence suggests McKnight did not lunge at Gasser, Troxclair testified.
"That law was not intended for you to shoot someone who puts his hands on your auto", Swaim said. "Mr. Gasser was not going to let him get away with that". He spent a season in the Canadian Football League, playing two games for the Edmonton Eskimos and three for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Swaim went through several elements of Gasser's story at that time, noting similarities between it and his side of the story in the McKnight killing, ending with his claim, "In self-defense, I struck him three times".
He later played for the University of Southern California as well as the NFL's New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs before injuries derailed his athletic career.
