Ministers abandon legal bid to block release of'black cab rapist John Worboys
A judicial review over the Parole Board's decision to release black-cab serial rapist John Worboys will not take place, the Justice Secretary announced.
MINISTERS can't stop John Worboys being released within days, MPs were told today.
"The decision by the Parole Board to release John Worboys is astonishing and it is extremely disappointing that the government is accepting this without challenge".
The licensed London black cab driver told some women he had won money at a casino or lottery and offered them spiked champagne in an invitation to celebrate with him.
He was jailed indefinitely in 2009, with a minimum term of eight years, for drugging and sexually assaulting women passengers in London.
Worboys was convicted of 19 offences against 12 victims but has been linked to more than 100 complaints in total.
The secretary of state commissioned legal advice last week on the plausibility and prospect of success of a judicial review.
The official probation inspector will examine whether justice chiefs made a mistake by not letting victims have a say.
"The prospect of the release of this man is deeply concerning to them, to many members of this house and to the wider public".
Two of his victims have been crowdfunding for legal representation to challenge his release, and say they only found out he was leaving prison through the media.

Mr Gauke said he had taken legal advice that suggested an attempt to overturn the decision would be unsuccessful.
He said: "I know this will disappoint the victims in this case and members of this House given the crimes for which he has been convicted. I share those concerns".
Shadow justice minister Imran Hussain said: "Many will be disappointed by today's news".
He said: "I have expanded the review to include whether there should be a mechanism to allow parole decisions to be reconsidered and how that might be best achieved whilst retaining the independence of the decision making process".
But on Friday he said such a move was not feasible.
He confirmed that Worboys would not be freed until his license conditions have been finalised and that further meetings concerning his release are to take place next week.
Labour's Yvette Cooper has previously pointed out that given Worboys' profession, he knows where some of his victims live.
'It is crucial that the decision to release this manipulative, calculating and unsafe man can be considered by the courts as soon as possible'.
"The generosity of people and the kind comments they have made have really touched me", said one of the victims pursuing the review.
