The attacker struck near the old interior ministry building after successfully passing through one police checkpoint, said interior ministry deputy spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.

Police had identified the vehicle bomb before the detonation but had hoped to push it away from the crowd when the suicide bomber detonated the explosives, according to Afghan news network Ariana. A popular stationery market was near the site of the blast, the force of which shattered windows of surrounding buildings and caused some low-rise structures to collapse.

The hospital's coordinator Dejan Panic, meanwhile took to twitter and said "it's a massacre".

A plume of grey smoke rose from the blast area in the city center and buildings hundreds of meters away were shaken by the force of the explosion.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is the third major explosion this month.

This bombing is the latest in a string of deadly attacks across Afghanistan in the past week, including the deadly 17-hour siege last Saturday on the Intercontinental Hotel and the attack on the Save The Children organization in Jalalabad, Nangarhar among others.
