What is more, the forums which have called for the shutdown separately seem to have been divided over having what they call nearly back-to-back bandhs which may inconvenience the public but achieve little.While the January 25 Karnataka shutdown is called by pro-Kannada outfits to put pressure on the Centre to resolve the decades-long Mahadayi water sharing issue, the second one in Bengaluru on February 4 is being organised by the farmers' associations to coincide with Prime Minister Modi's visit to the city for the BJP's Parivarthana Yatra rally.

The party alleged Congress government had a role in selection of dates when BJP national President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to visit the poll bound state to take part in "Nav Karnataka Parivartan Yatra", organised by the state unit.

The Karnataka bandh has been advanced to January 25 as there are continuous holidays on the weekends.

Referring to the detention of BJP city Youth Morcha president, Gokul Govardhan by the Nazarbad police, Mr Yeddyurappa alleged that he was assaulted by the police.

"There is no necessity for a Karnataka bandh.If there was a bandh in the affected area, it is fine;what has Mysuru got to do with the issue?"

Accusing Mr Siddaramaiah of using the state machinery to victimise his political rivals, he said, "When I was Chief Minister I did not indulge in politics of hatred, but you (Siddaramaiah) formed the Anti-Corruption Bureau and targeted whoever was against you". There is no need for a bandh (here). He said: "The all-Karnataka bandh will be observed on January 25, to pressure all political parties to solve the Mahadayi issue at the earliest".

Speaking to News18, Nagaraj said that there will be a total bandh on both the days and thousands of activists will greet Modi and Shah with black flags. Though Vatal Nagaraj, the leader of Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha (KCVP), claims that about 2,000 Kannada outfits are backing the call, some activists say that they were not taken into confidence.

Suspect arrested in Zainab murder case after DNA match
Five days after her disappearance, she was found raped, dead and buried in a garbage dump on January 9 near the Kashmir Chowk. Police claim the suspect has confessed to the crime. "He was arrested before, but was released as we did not have evidence".

Though senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was in Goa, she did not restrain the Congress leaders of Goa, who were against the release of Mahadayi waters.

Siddaramaiah hit back saying, "BJP leaders lack commonsense".

"Will Nagaraj or Kannada organisations listen to government. why should we ask them to organise bandh?"

Kannada activists said with the PM postponing his visit to Bengaluru, a bandh on January 25 isn't relevant.

State-owned Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will support the called by Kannada organisations over the Mahadayi river issue.

The project is being undertaken to improve drinking water supply to the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad and districts of Belagavi and Gadag.

Attempts have been made by Karnataka to amicably solve the issue pending before the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal through discussion have failed to bear fruit.
