An aspiring filmmaker has sued rap mogul Russell Simmons for allegedly raping her, seeking US$5 million as she called for a reckoning in the hip-hop industry on the mistreatment of women.
Numerous incidents in question took place in the 1990s before the Simmons marriage in 1998, though a new lawsuit filed this week by accuser Jennifer Jarosik, who says he raped her, expands the timeline to 2016, seven years after their divorce.
The suit says he tried to have sex with her at the meeting. He has denied all allegations against him and just yesterday, his former wife and mother to his two children, Kimora Lee Simmons, has released a statement about the man she has known "for over 25 years".
After she said no, Simmons knocked her off his bed and hit her, and then "pounced on her while she was still in shock and fear, and proceeded to rape her", said the lawsuit filed Wednesday in a federal court in Los Angeles.
Lee Simmons later went on Instagram and elaborated, explaining "These allegations against him are nothing like the person I have known in all that time".

Jennifer Jarosik, 37, said she befriended Simmons over their shared interests in yoga, meditation and a vegan diet - areas that Simmons had been closely associated with since stepping back from music production.
Simmons, whose company Def Jam made stars of hip-hop artists such as LL Cool J, Slick Rick, The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, is one of the few music industry icons caught up in the recent wave of allegations that so-far has struck mostly those in the movie industry, journalism and politics.
