Liverpool 2-1 Everton Late van Dijk debut header sends Reds through

The Reds forked out a world-record fee for a defender to snare the Dutchman from Southampton at the start of the January transfer window and he marked his debut with the winning goal.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says Virgil van Dijk's goalscoring debut was a "fairytale".

"A soft one, but a penalty", Klopp said.

"It was a hard decision to make to be honest because, to be 100 per cent honest, the first plan was not to start him tonight but then Dejan (Lovren) and Raggy (Ragnar Klaven) played a lot of games in the last few weeks, so I changed my mind this morning".

"I still know that he's a human being and things can happen that he can show it tonight, things like this happen".

"He showed a lot of things we want him to show in the future very often: heading of course, football-wise his first touch was good, good under pressure and then around set-pieces a proper threat". We have a good chance to win this.

A centre-half by trade, it may be a while until Van Dijk is witnessed knee-sliding in such a way again.

"From what I've seen over the last couple of days - I've only been with the group for four or five days - it's a special group with a lot of quality, a lot of presence and a lot of personality", the 26-year-old told liverpoolfc.com.

"But we all know that expectation can lead to pressure and then you look a little bit different than you look usually, and he obviously could stand the pressure". I just did it. I'm very happy to have my debut, to score and to win. It's just the start. They played football, a big difference to the last game between us. "It was a tough game but we're through".

Van Dijk made the flawless start to his Liverpool career as he headed in an 84th-minute goal to put Liverpool into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

He said: 'It's not an easy game to step into but it's the sort of game I'm sure he's come here to play and under the lights at Anfield it's very special, and a Merseyside derby.

The incident arose after Holgate pushed the Reds forward into the crowd before the pair exchanged insults within earshot of Madley.
