Bengaluru/Hyderabad: Karnataka home minister and Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy on Monday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had reached a secret understanding to divide the minority votes in several constituencies of the state in the assembly elections to be held later this year. To wriggle out of this embarrassing situation, the Congress has resorted to this "dirty trick", he asserted. This only showed how desperate and frustrated the Congress was, he said.

The BJP maintains that it is the Congress which is trying to set up pacts with radical organisations such as the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in communally sensitive regions such as Coastal Karnataka among other places. Having realised that the ground was slipping from under its feet after seeing the tremendous response to Parivarthana Yatra by state BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa, the Congress was rattled and had launched a disinformation campaign.

Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the BJP had an informal alliance with the AIMIM in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections past year. Our target is to win 150 seats and our preparation is to achieve that goal. Asaduddin Owaisi's party, the Congress suspects, will field candidates to divide Muslim votes- traditionally a Congress vote bank in Karnataka.

BJP has termed Congress' allegation of an electoral pact with AIMIM as absolutely baseless and far from truth. "The Congress is spooked that half of the Muslim population- the women- will vote for BJP just like they did in Uttar Pradesh thanks to Triple Talaq. One can imagine the consequences if the divisive forces come together", Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters on seeking his reaction to reports in a section of media that the BJP was looking to have a truck with AIMIM to ensure division of minority votes.

"Their (BJP) plan may be to divide votes... not only today".

However, he is confident that AIMIM will fail as the same strategy was used in civic polls in Bengaluru as well as Nanded in Maharashtra, but did not work.
