The largest wildfire on record in California has been declared contained, days after mud on the coastal mountain slopes it scorched crashed down on homes during a storm, killing at least 18 people.
- Both directions of U.S. 101 remain closed from the junction of State Route 126 in Ventura County to Milpas Street in Santa Barbara County due to mudslides, so motorists are advised to use the I-5 as an alternate route. In addition to causing massive destruction, the fire also contributed to earlier this week.
Authorities determined the fire was completely contained after survey flights over the burn area Thursday. The blaze began on December 4 and fierce winds drove the flames through tinder-dry brush, chaparral and trees. The fire destroyed 1,063 structures and damaged 280 others. Two people were killed in connection to the fire.
