Graham suggested Mueller look into reports he was nearly fired in June

In separate television interviews, Senators Susan Collins and Lindsey Graham expressed dismay at reports that the Republican president had told the top White House lawyer to order U.S. Justice Department officials to fire Mueller.

GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy, who has been a vocal critic of the special counsel and questioned the FBI's impartiality after emails revealed two agents previously on his team made disparaging comments about Trump, urged lawmakers to "leave him the hell alone".

Short was somewhat dismissive of Mueller's probe, saying "taxpayers have spent millions and millions of dollars on investigations [that have] not proven any collusion thus far" between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.

Both Collins and Graham said they saw no sign that Trump is now trying to fire Mueller.

Collins said Sunday that the president can't directly fire Mueller, but that authority rests exclusively with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller as special counsel in May.

Graham and three Democratic senators introduced legislation last August that would protect special counsels, including Mueller, by requiring that a panel of federal judges review any action to remove them.

But in recent days Trump has put forward a more positive face regarding the investigation, telling reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he was "looking forward" to testifying under oath before the special counsel. "He feels like there's been millions of dollars of taxpayer dollars spent, and no evidence yet of collusion".

But Marc Short, the White House director of legislative affairs, disputed the report that Trump wanted to ax Mueller.

"Don McGahn, if the story is true in the New York Times, did the right thing, and the good news is the president listened", Graham said. "Ever. Whether in tweets, except in private conversations with his attorney", Collins said. "The White House continues to cooperate in every manner providing any document that the special counsel has asked for".

But the White House also reportedly has had the deputy attorney general in its crosshairs as the Russian Federation investigation drags on, CNN reported Friday.

"People need to be prepared that a guy like Bob Mueller may come to a different conclusion that will elate some people and anger some people, but I have total confidence in him", Gates said. "I take lying to the American people very, very seriously, so absolutely", he said on ABC, when asked if Trump lying about the firing would be grounds for impeachment.
