Legendary Bengali Actress Supriya Devi Passes Away at 83

Devi is best known for her portrayal of Neeta in Ritwik Ghatak's Bengali film Megha Dhaka Tara (1960).

Veteran Bengali actor Supriya Devi died in Kolkata on Friday.

Born in 1933, Supriya Devi entered was introduced to the world of theatre at the tender age of seven by her father Gopal Chandra Banerjee.

She received the Padma Shri and West Bengal government's highest civilian award Banga Vibhushan, besides the Filmfare East Lifetime Achievement Award.

She was 83-years-old at the time of her death. She retired from films for a while before returning in the late 1950s. She had made her debut in Uttam Kumar-starrer Basu Parivar in 1952 and never looked back after Sonar Harin opposite Uttam Kumar in 1959. "She has been honoured with the Bengal Film Journalists" Association Award twice. Her enormous acting prowess once again found voice in Ritwik Ghatak's Megha Dhaka Tara.

Supriya Devi was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award in 2014.

Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who acted with her in Jodi Jantem and several other films, remembered working with her on so many films over the last five decades. "We regularly talked over the phone".
