Thames Water partners with London mayor for refill scheme
The rail infrastructure owner had previously refused to install fountains because of concern that it would lose rental income from station shops which sell bottled water.
A network of drinking fountains is to be installed across London this year as part of a city-wide plan to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated.
"In London, the mayor is supporting a number of ambitious schemes to help the public cut their use of plastic and access free water... to dramatically reduce the purchase of single-use plastic bottles".
City Hall officers have been tasked with "urgently reviewing" suitable sites and funding models for new water fountains in London, including Transport for London sites across busy commuter routes and in business and shopping districts.
Steve Robertson, CEO at Thames Water, which is a partner on the project, adds that the campaign aims to "celebrate the quality of [London's] tap water" and make it "more accessible" to people when they are on the move.

Speaking of his recent call for information, Sadiq Khan said: "I want to know how this technology is affecting Londoners' lives, and also to understand in what ways we can build on this with new technologies in the future".
Shirley Rodrigues, Deputy Mayor for Environment, said: "We shouldn't be using single-use plastics". Khan has also asked developers to identify suitable locations for water fountains during the planning process in new or redeveloped public spaces.
The #OneLess project, a movement against disposable plastic bottles run by the Zoological Society of London, will be analysing whether the fountains have a positive effect on levels of plastic in the local environment.
The proposed initiative is set to cost £750,000 over the span of the next 3 years as reported in London's budget plan for 2018, which will need to be approved by the London Assembly's budget committee this Thursday.
