Tim Beckham Manny Machado
Orioles' manager Buck Showalter said Saturday that Tim Beckham will open the 2018 season as the team's starting third baseman. The three-time All-Star moved to third base as a rookie in 2013 in deference to veteran shortstop, and he has won two Gold Gloves at the position.
Machado, though, was nearly exclusively a shortstop during his minor league career, making all but four of his 206 starts at that position. Earlier this offseason, there were rumors that Machado wanted to make the switch to shortstop again in 2018, and it looks like the club will do all they can to accommodate that request in advance of his impending free agency in 2019. Showalter likes the setup of his infield with Machado at shortstop and Beckham at third rather than the other way around.
Per ESPN, Machado, who is in the past year of his contract with the Orioles and has been at the center of trade rumors throughout the offseason, has wanted to move back to shortstop since joining the organization. We had some challenges there without J.J. and I think Manny is the best option there, and Tim can do it, too. "I've talked to Tim some". I think Tim is capable of playing third base. "We're going to test it out". We'll see. There could be some adjustment time this spring.

Machado, 25, got his start at shortstop during his days in the Orioles' farm system, but has yet to play a full season there on the big league level. I know how important Manny is for our team and I think he could be the most impactful there, especially without J.J. That's a huge loss.
