U.S. Representative Martha McSally, a former Air Force combat pilot, said on Friday she would run against former sheriff Joe Arpaio, a close ally of President Donald Trump, in the race for the Republican nomination for a key Senate seat from Arizona.

McSally, who has always been expected to run and is the preferred candidate of Senate GOP officials, launched her campaign with a slick 83-second video she posted online.

Later today, McSally, a retired Air Force colonel and the first female fighter pilot to fly a combat mission, plans to fly herself across Arizona in a World War II fighter plane to announce her candidacy in Tucson, Phoenix and Prescott.

But in a sign of how thoroughly Trump now dominates her party, McSally has been snuggling up to the 45th president in preparation for her Senate run.

Arpaio is a sheriff known for his hardline and controversial border-security policies, as well as his ardent belief that former President Obama forged his birth certificate.

Despite control of all branches of the government and major leads, it's becoming increasingly clear that the GOP is going to squander all of their political capital in the 2018 midterms, likely putting one - if not both - chambers of Congress back in Democratic control. Republicans hold a 51-49 advantage in the chamber.

"Like our president, I'm exhausted of PC politicians and their BS excuses", charged in in the video. "That's why I told Washington Republicans to grow a pair of ovaries and get the job done".

"I absolutely refused to bow down to Sharia Law", McSally says in the video.

"I absolutely refuse to bow down to Sharia law", McSally says, after a narrator discusses her successful fight against a USA military policy that required women to wear head-to-toe garb in Saudi Arabia. "After eight years of fighting, I won my battle for the religious freedom of American servicewomen", she said.

Trump pardoned Arpaio last August, setting off a firestorm of controversy.

The primary could pull Trump in competing directions.

No one ever considered a potential Democratic Senate pick-up in the deep red state of Alabama - that is, until the Alabama GOP gave its party nomination to former judge and fringe right-wing candidate Roy Moore.

The walkoff line calls McSally a "patriot", a "warrior" and a "leader". Falcon said she hopes Latinos in the state will work hard to support a better candidate for the general election.

A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday on which candidate Trump prefers in the primary.

Securing the USA border and figuring out how to normalize the status of "the 10 million to 15 million undocumented immigrants" already here - "who, let's be honest, will not and should not be forcibly removed" - are the two biggest challenges, they add, and "when prioritizing the immigration problems we face, the case of 200,000 Salvadorans who accepted our invitation to live and work here legally would not even make a Top 10 list".

Like few others, the Arizona election is expected to showcase the feud between the Republican Party's establishment and its fiery anti-immigration wing in particular - all in a border state that features one of the nation's largest Hispanic populations.
