Vicky Gounder and his accomplice Prema Lahoriya were killed in the encounter in a village in Sri Ganganagar district near the Punjab-Rajasthan border, according to The Tribune.

Two wanted criminals were shot dead on Friday in an encounter with the Punjab Police, ANI reported.

Reports said both were killed by a police team chasing them based on reliable information on his whereabouts.

Kahlwan was in police custody and on his way for a court hearing when gangsters attacked him. OCCU AIG Gurmeet Chauhan, who led the police party, said the third person was injured in the encounter, and his identity is yet to be identified. "Gounder was also killed inside the house", Gupta said. Vicky Gounder was one of the six prisoners who had escaped from maximum-security Nabha Jail in 2016.

He was Punjab's most-wanted criminal after the jailbreak. While on the run, on April 22 this year Gounder killed three members of a rival gang in Gurdaspur. He was serving jail term in Nabha Jail from where he had escaped along with six other prisoners.

Police had arrested Gounder in December 2015 as a prime suspect in the murder of a gangster Sukha Kahlwan. But Gounder continued to evade arrest.

Gounder was wanted in at least 15 cases of murder, kidnapping and robbery in north India.

Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated the Punjab Police force that carried out the operation. "Proud of you boys" he tweeted.
