A mother has sparked a debate among parents by revealing that she charges her five-year-old daughter rent out of her weekly allowance. However, her five-year-old daughter owes her for rent, water, electricity; TV and food for which she needs to pay $5 back to her.

She said her method is to help prepare her 5-year-old daughter on how the real world works. Her daughter gets to keep the last $2 to either save or spend.

But, lest the little girl runs away with an erroneous impression that one is free to do anything one wants with any money that comes into his/her possession, the dutiful mum explains to her daughter that in real world, most people spend most of their earnings on bills, with little to spend on themselves.

However, unlike most landlords, Essence isn't keeping the money herself.

"So if she decides to move out on her own she will have $3,380 [£2,431] to start off".
