In-store events to honor Special Olympics athletes planned in 2018

The event opens at 8 a.m. with the Polar Strut, and the Polar Plunge will be at 9:45 a.m.at Schlitterbahn.

Local law enforcement agencies set to take the plunge from noon to 3 p.m. include: Edmonton Police Service, RCMP, Strathcona Enforcement, Alberta Sheriffs, Alberta Corrections, University of Alberta Enforcement, Alberta Fish & Wildlife, Alberta Health Services Protective Services and Alberta Parks.

"Our goal is get 1,000 people across Alberta to plunge for Special Olympics", explains Johnny Byrne, president of Special Olympics Alberta. Money raised will go toward providing sports and health and wellness programs for almost 5,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities in Kansas, according to a spokesman.

The winter event is held in partnership with the Law Enforcement Torch Run later in the year, also for Special Olympics Alberta.

To participate in the plunge, and receive a commemorative t-shirt, individuals may sign up on plungeks.org and either donate or raise a minimum of $75.

According to Wilson County Special Olympics coordinator Dawn Bradley, this is the group's largest fundraiser, and it hopes to raise $10,000 to be used in the county sports programs.

In June 2018, Wawa will host special "send-off" events in all six states of Wawa's operating area to show support of the athletes and teams leaving to compete in the 50th Anniversary Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle.

All donations go toward providing life-changing sports training and competition opportunities for Special Olympics participants.

Schulte said Special Olympics Kansas is looking to build communities of inclusion.

A year ago the event raised more than $160,000 to support Special Olympics athletes in the area.
