"Really, by not letting us run an ad, we think they are taking a position".

As evidence of that, the government shutdown last weekend initially meant that troops stationed overseas wouldn't be able to watch the Armed Services Network and thus the AFC and NFC championship games; the league worked out some sort of deal to make sure that they still could.

The Philadelphia Eagles will take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl on Sunday, February 4, 2018.

NFL Vice President of Communications Brian McCarthy said in a statement that official Super Bowl programs aren't a place for political messaging.

She argued that many National Football League fans disagreed with players refusing to stand for the anthem all season, but they justified it as free speech and continued tuning in to games. "The NFL has long supported the military and veterans and will again salute our service members in the Super Bowl with memorable on-field moments that will be televised as part of the game", the statement read.

"We looked to work with the organization and asked it to consider other options such as 'Please Honor our Veterans, '" McCarthy said.

McCarthy told the newspaper that a Veterans of Foreign Wars ad has been submitted and approved that reads, "We Stand for Veterans", which includes text that describes benefits the VFW offers.

The print advertisement, produced by a pro-veteran advocacy organization called AMVETS, simply says #PleaseStand and then asks for a $20 donation to help those that have served in the military.

On Monday, AMVETS national commander Marion Polk released a letter that had also been delivered to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. "But imposing corporate censorship to deny that same right to those veterans who have secured it for us all is reprehensible and totally beyond the pale".

AMVETS was prepared to pay $30,000 to a third-party publisher for the full-page ad, the price available to nonprofits. "This is part of our Americanism program" in which the organization conducts seminars in schools and with youth groups on the proper way to display, care for and respect the flag. The program also involves a poster and essay contest for K-12 students.

"The group wanted an ad with the hashtag "#PleaseStand", requesting players stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner", in response to the controversial anthem protests that have rocked the league.

"We never meant to be disrespectful", he said.

In October, Vice President Pence left an NFL game in Indianapolis after players knelt during the national anthem. American Veterans has since accused the National Football League of censorship.
