Natalie Finn died in October 2016 from a heart attack caused by starvation.

"The court can not imagine what kind of mental trauma these children have suffered", Romano said.

The woman is also forbidden to have any contact with her surviving adopted children, the Des Moines Register reported.

Finn was given the consecutive sentences after being found guilty of first-degree murder of her daughter Natalie and three counts of kidnapping for confining Natalie's siblings Jaden and Mikayla.

Nicole Finn, 43, locked the siblings in a filthy single bedroom in her Iowa home before boarding up the windows when she caught them sneaking out to beg strangers for food.

Nicole Finn's defense lawyers portrayed her as a divorced woman who became increasingly overwhelmed by trying to parent four adopted children with behavior disorders. Lucas agreed, saying, "You have to take into account the three separate victims in this case, and I think the message needs to be sent that what happened to Natalie and the other two are three separate, distinct crimes".

"But if there was ever a case deserving consecutive life sentences, this would be that case", he said. In an exchange with judge, who was asking Finn for any evidence that would show proof of a new trial, she said, "These guys probably wouldn't do it".

But they allowed her and the other children to continue living there.

It was the only reaction from Finn, who offered no statement or apologies for abusing, neglecting, and murdering her daughter. Experts testified that her siblings, Mikayla and Jaden, were at risk of starving to death as well and spent months recovering after Natalie suffered cardiac arrest.

Government Shutdown: Senate Vote Pushed Back To Noon Monday
Lamar Alexander also noted "progress" but wouldn't provide details: "We'll know more in two hours", he said around 3 p.m. Minutes after a Senate bill collapsed Friday night, the blame game for the federal government shutdown began.

But the jury that considered the evidence, including testimony that one of the children had to drink from a toilet because she was so thirsty, and returned a guilty verdict.

On Friday, state attorney Bret Lucas reminded Polk County Judge Karen Romano of the horrors Natalie endured during her short life.

Nicole Finn, the mother convicted of murdering her adopted daughter, was back in court Friday morning.

Detective Chris Morgan, from the West Des Moines police department, wrote in a report: "Many animals roamed freely, including well over a dozen kittens and cats".

But the abuse continued after the authorities left. She died in a hospital several days after her October 2016 rescue, from a heart attack brought on by starvation.

Natalie vomited, choked and finally died on that bedroom floor in an adult diaper.

An autopsy revealed that she weighed just 38 kilograms at the time of death, and had no remaining body fat.

Nathan estimated about 15 minutes passed as Nicole did CPR before he called 911. He faces several felony charges, including kidnapping and child endangerment.
