No evidence children given alcohol by parents drink less harmfully

Middle-class parents who serve their teenagers a glass of wine at dinner often argue that they are encouraging a more civilised Mediterranean drinking culture.

But a six-year study of almost 2,000 families has revealed this is a myth.

"We advise that parents should avoid supplying alcohol to their teenagers if they wish to reduce their risk of alcohol-related harms".

"It is, unfortunately, well-intentioned, but not a good idea", said Richard Mattick, professor of drug and alcohol studies at the University of New South Wales and a co-author of the research.

In addition, the researchers found that teens whose parents supplied them with alcohol in one year were twice as likely to also get it elsewhere the next year.

Taking into account factors including children's sex, age, and household income, children who had been given alcohol by parents alone had 2.58 times the odds of reporting binge-drinking in the following year, compared with those with no supply of alcohol; the odds of alcohol-related harm or symptoms of alcohol use disorder were also more than twice as high as for those with no supply. But they say its size, and the fact it looked at children into their late teens, meant it was better able to probe the impact of parental alcohol supply than the previous report.

Half of British teenagers start drinking by the age of 14, a major study found in January 2018.

The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has more on underage drinking.

The study of 11,000 children painted a worrying portrait of risky behaviour starting from a young age.

Trump would consider returning to the TPP
Fully 22 provisions of the original TPP agreement have been suspended, up from 20 frozen in November previous year . New Zealand Trade Minister David Parker confirmed the deal would be signed in Chile on March 8.

University College London researchers tracked the participants since birth as part of the Millennium Cohort Study.

By study's end, 81 percent of teens who got alcohol from both their parents and other people reported binge drinking (defined as having more than four drinks on a single occasion).

The six-year analysis of almost 2,000 12 to 18-year-olds revealed there were "no benefits" to introducing alcohol to teenagers at home and that doing so only encouraged them to seek it elsewhere.

Some 19 per cent had tried alcohol at all - getting it from any source - when they were 12, while 79 per cent had drunk before their 18th birthday.

In terms of future alcohol prevention priorities, Mattick and colleagues called for a focus on parents, not just school-based education and legislation enforcement: "Parents, policymakers, and clinicians need to be made aware that parental provision of alcohol is associated with risk, not with protection, to reduce the extent of parental supply in high-income countries, and in low- and middle-income countries that are increasingly embracing the consumption of alcohol".

British alcohol experts welcomed the study.

In many countries, parents provide alcohol to their underage kids as a way to introduce them to drinking carefully, and believe it will protect them from the harms of heavy drinking.

'Predictably, it finds that children who have no access to alcohol experience the least alcohol-related problems'.
