LONDON (AP) - Lawyers for Julian Assange were asking a British court on Friday to drop a United Kingdom arrest warrant for the WikiLeaks founder, a move that would free him to leave the Ecuadorean embassy after more than five years.
Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in June 2012, after exhausting options in United Kingdom courts to avoid extradition over the allegations stemming from a 2010 trip to Sweden.
Assange is asking the court to lift the warrant about eight months after Swedish prosecutors dropped the underlying rape probe, saying that his steps to evade questioning made it impossible to pursue the case.

The warrant was issued in 2012 after he breached bail conditions by seeking asylum in Ecuador's London embassy - where he has been living ever since.
