The Shape of Water’ compared to 2015 Dutch short Netherlands academy shuts down plagiarism murmurs
Best picture nominations went to the romantic drama "Call Me By Your Name", the Winston Churchill biopic "Darkest Hour", the World War II thriller "Dunkirk", the horror satire "Get Out", the coming-of-age dramedy "Lady Bird", the period romance "Phantom Thread", the Pentagon Papers drama "The Post", "The Shape of Water" and the dark morality tale "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".
The acting nominees included a number of Oscar stalwarts: Meryl Streep earned her 21st Oscar nod for her turn as Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham in Steven Spielberg's "The Post", while Denzel Washington picked up his eighth for "Roman J. Israel, Esq." and Daniel Day-Lewis earned his sixth for "Phantom Thread".
Best Picture rivals include "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", which took top honors at the Golden Globes and SAG awards.
Backstage: A strong year for female artists is proven again with Gerwig's well-deserved acknowledgement for "Lady Bird", making her only the fifth woman ever nominated for directing.
Rockwell, who has been hailed for his work as a sheriff's deputy in "Three Billboards, " leads a supporting-actor category that also features Willem Dafoe of "The Florida Project, " Woody Harrelson of "Three Billboards, " Richard Jenkins for "The Shape of Water" and Christopher Plummer for "All the Money in the World".
And the Nominees Are: "Call Me By Your Name"; "Darkest Hour"; "Dunkirk"; "Get Out"; "Lady Bird"; "Phantom Thread"; "The Post"; "The Shape of Water"; "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing".
Both Amazon and Netflix failed to crack the best picture category but earned nominations elsewhere. Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani rounded out the original screenplay category for penning "The Big Sick".
The 2018 Oscar Nominations were announced on Tuesday giving tons of big films a shot at the big prize.
Best Supporting Actress: Mary J. Blige, "Mudbound"; Allison Janney,"I, Tonya"; Lesley Manville, "Phantom Thread"; Laurie Metcalf, "Lady Bird"; Octavia Spencer, "The Shape of Water". What's Ahead: Right now, with 13 nominations, including salutes to its director and three of its stars, the front runner has to be "The Shape of Water".
