Newcastle Airport is expected to reopen after an out of control bushfire that also threatened homes in the area forced its shutdown on Saturday afternoon.
Residents living in Tomago, Williamtown and Raymond Terrace, 15kms north of Newcastle, have been told to take shelter and not attempt to flee as it's "too late".
The fire, originally one trail travelling east towards the airport, split in two and is now heading in separate directions.
Flights from Newcastle Airport are being disrupted and Jetstar has cancelled all services.
