Oakland mayor defies federal gov't threat over sanctuary cities threat

New 'sanctuary city' threat by Trump administration sparks fresh fight with mayors

The Justice Department warned in letters to more than two dozen sanctuary cities and states that they could be denied important public safety grant worth millions of US dollars from the federal government.

Mayors across the country, including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, announced they would boycott a planned meeting at the White House with President Donald Trump Wednesday.

At a news conference, the mayor slammed the Trump administration for again threatening sanctuary cities that protect undocumented immigrants.

The department has repeatedly threatened to deny millions of dollars in important grant money from communities that refuse to share such information with federal authorities, as part of the Trump administration's promised crackdown on cities and states that refuse to help enforce USA immigration laws. Many cities have been openly defiant in the face of the threats, with lawsuits pending in Chicago, Philadelphia and California over whether the administration has overstepped its authority by seeking to withhold grant money.

Chavez-DeRemer was among eight metro-area mayors in Washington D.C. for the US Conference of Mayors. Garcetti's office said the mayor had not been invited by the White House to attend the meeting.

Those state and local officials could be legally forced to cooperate with federal immigration authorities in enforcing crackdown on undocumented immigrants under their jurisdiction, Justice Department officials said.

Still, many mayors did attend.

At the meeting, which took place without the boycotters, Mr. Trump praised those who showed up and blasted the ones who didn't.

Ever since the show returned to the small screen, fans have been eager to find how Jack (played by Milo Ventimiglia ) dies. It's hard to pass something down from generation to generation if you throw it away (grandma won't be too happy).

That was too much for New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, chairman of the Conference of Mayors, who said he would boycott a meeting at the White House on infrastructure in response to the anti-sanctuary announcement.

Mayor Libby Shaaf of Oakland city on the USA west coast Wednesday defied a threat of the federal Justice Department over sanctuary cities and rejected a White House meeting with President Donald Trump, local TV KPIX 5 reported.

The Justice Department first warned local governments during the Obama administration that they must allow their law enforcement officers to give information to immigration authorities.

"If we have a country with no laws, then nothing matters", Sanders added.

The 23 jurisdictions that received letters Wednesday include cities in California, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

Some local officials vowed to fight, like Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, a former USA attorney. "It is contrary to public safety, it's contrary to the values of our nation, and it's contrary to the ideals and the law as we established", he said.

Emanuel said Chicago and other cities rely on community policing strategies to build trust and help fight crime. Louisville is both in compliance with federal law and a welcoming city, he said.
