Acclaimed Ottanthulal artist Kalamandalam Geethanandan died on Sunday around 8 pm while performing at Avittathur Mahavishnu Temple in Kerala.
He is survived by his wife Shobana, and son Sanalkumar and daughter Sreelakshmi, who both are Thullal artists.
The end of the artiste, who had performed on more than 5,000 stages in India and overseas, came during a stage performance at Mahadeva Temple, Avittathur. In 1983, he became a teacher of the indigenous art form. Geethanandan had won the Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award in 2000, Kunjan Award of the state government in 2002, Kunchan Nambiar Thullal Puraskaram of the state government in 2003 and the Kalamandalam award in 2010. "Geethanandan was one such master and his demise is a great loss to the art", added Madhu.

Geethanandan was born into a rather humble family and joined Kalamandalam as a thullal student in 1974. Geethanandan had recently written on Facebook about the unexpected help which came his way from a great man. He was the first artist to present thullalpadha kacheri (a rendition of thullal in a musical format).
He was instrumental in conducting the first concert using Ottan Thullal rhymes and was the first artiste to perform the art form in Paris. He performed at 10 venues in France in 1984. He has performed on almost 5,000 stages across Indian and the globe and has trained almost 1,000 students in Thullal. He has also handled notable roles in almost 30 Malayalam movies. He had acted in over 30 films, including the Mohanlal-starrer Kamaladalam.
