Search underway for climbers on Pakistan's 'killer mountain'
Pakistan launched a search Saturday for two alpinists who went missing while attempting to climb the country's second-highest peak Nanga Parbat, nicknamed "killer mountain" for its treacherous terrain.
Tomasz Mackiewicz from Poland and Elisabeth Revol of France were attempting to ascend the 8,126-meter (26,660-foot) Nanga Parbat in Pakistan's Himalaya mountain range. But bad weather is hampering efforts to reach the pair as temperatures have dropped to -60C where the climbers were last seen.
A spokesman for the Alpine Club of Pakistan said that four mountaineers were lifted from the base camp of the country's highest mountain K-2 to rescue the missing climbers. The volunteer group, part of a Polish expedition, includes a doctor.
A Pakistan army helicopter will pick them up from their base camp and fly to Nanga Parbat, he said.

"They will be brought from K2 to Nanga Parbat and then the operation will begin", Asghar Porik of Jasmine Tours told Reuters on Friday. "We are hopeful that both the climbers stranded on Nanga Parbat will be rescued", he added.
Nanga Parbat, known to climbers as "Killer Mountain", is one of the most unsafe peaks to climb in the world.
On June 27 past year, two mountaineers, Alberto Zerain, a Spanish alpinist, and Mariano Galvan, an Argentinian national, went missing while trying to climb the same peak, according to local reports. Tourism has since slowly recovered.
