PIL against Calcutta University's decision to award CM with D.Litt

Kolkata: The Calcutta University on Thursday conferred an honorary D Litt on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in recognition of her social service, amid a public interest litigation in the high court challenging the varsity's decision. "History should not be distorted", she said. Intolerance is rising in the country.

The University of Calcutta will wait to see if the court passes any interim order restraining it from conferring the degree so as to avoid embarrassment, said a key official, who asked not to be named.

Mamata Banerjee is the first Chief Minister of West Bengal to be honoured with D.Litt degree by Calcutta University during governance.

Banerjee had said attempts to distort history is nothing but a crime while addressing the 78th Indian History Congress in Kolkata on December 29 past year. "India has diversity of origin and we should respect that".

Banerjee said, "I can assure you that I will keep this honour on a high pedestal till my last days.I will never use this D Litt for professional reasons".

The petition filed by two individuals, Abu Taleb and Ranjugopal Mukherjee, found a mention at the Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya, on Monday, following which the Bench directed to file the case as a PIL.
