For First Time, Pope Francis Marries Couple in Flight

Paula Podest and Carlos Ciuffardi had planned to have the church wedding almost eight years ago in February 2010, but their plans were put on hold when their church collapsed in a devastating quake that rocked Chile.

Hours after the pope arrived in Chile on Monday, two small wooden churches were burned to the ground near Temuco, where Francis is due to visit on Wednesday. He asked Ciuffardi if his wife was still the boss, to which Ciuffardi laughed and said yes. On hearing they hadn't - an quake destroyed the church they were to marry in just before the ceremony - Francis immediately offered to marry them there and then. He added, "We hope it will promote marriage".

"This is what's missing in the world, the sacrament of marriage", the Pope told them.

Earlier that day, the pope told Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and other government officials that he felt "bound to express my pain and shame" for the sexual abuse suffered by children in the care of Chile's clergy.

The Argentine Pope who in previous visits to South American has been to Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Colombia, has found in Chile - a country where the Catholic religion represents less than half of the population today - mixed emotions.

The pope's arrival, however, was marked by protests and attacks on Catholic churches, as anger over the abuses has been simmering in Chile. "We will show you a picture of the document later".

"It is a land that has given shelter to men and women of different peoples and cultures who have had to leave everything behind and set out", Francis said, reports The Los Angeles Times.

The pope has stepped up his defense of immigrants in recent months as migration has become a hot political issue in many countries.

"Like Mary at Cana, let us make an effort to be more attentive in our squares and towns, to notice those whose lives have been 'watered down, ' who have lost - or have been robbed of - reasons for celebrating".

The pontiff stressed that he knows the pain of priests and nuns "who after working so hard, have seen the harm that has led to suspicion and questioning; in some or many of you this has been a source of doubt, fear or lack of confidence".

After the Mass, as his entourage headed back to Iquique, Francis had a scare when a police horse reared up just as his popemobile was passing by, throwing the rider and forcing the pope's driver to swerve slightly to get out of the way.

"It's all calumny", Francis said in defense of Barros.

Francis then resumed his ride and confirmed to sources that the officer was "conscious the entire time".

According to the Vatican press office, the policewoman was "conscious and received some words of consolation from the Holy Father".

Francis has insisted on using minimally covered popemobiles on his foreign visits so he can be close to his flock.
