Asteroid 2002 AJ129 will make its closest approach to Earth on Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. EST. At the time of closest approach the asteroid will be no closer than 10 times the distance between Earth and the moon
2002 AJ129 is an intermediate-sized near-Earth asteroid, somewhere between 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers) and 0.75 miles (1.2 kilometers) across.
A "potentially hazardous" asteroid will soar by the Earth Feb. 4 - Super Bowl Sunday. At the time of closest approach, the asteroid will be at a distance of 2.6 million miles, or 4.2 million kilometers - about 10 times the distance between Earth and the moon.
And it is expected to fly past at speeds of 76,000 miles per hour making it almost 16 times faster than the world's quickest manned aircraft, the hypersonic North American X-15.
But that doesn't mean 2002 AJ129 is something to fear. NASA dubs any asteroid that's within 4.6 million miles of Earth and measures more than 500 feet in diameter as a "potentially hazardous asteroid". Christensen says this is a good opportunity to look at a near-Earth object that we haven't had a chance to really look at up close.

The asteroid 2002 AJ129, the size of which can be compared to a skyscraper, and according to various estimates, from 0.5 to 1.2 kilometers. Their objective is to discover and catalog potentially risky near-Earth asteroids.
