The importance of Makar Sankranti and why is it celebrated?

Makar is the Sanskrit word for Capricorn while Sankranti is the Sanskrit word for transition.

What is the significance of the festival? Functions were organised at several places to mark the day. The popular Kumbh Mela, held after every 12 years, starts on the very same day. On this day lakhs of people take holy dip in the sacred rivers. May you have a wonderful Makar Sankranti. It is a harvest festival, and the Sun God (Surya Bhagavan) is worshiped for good harvest.
