"Russia has matured to the stage for elections to take place not as a production with Putin seeking pseudo-opponents and everyone goes out an performs", Vladimir Milov, an opposition figure supporting the boycott, said during a debate on the Echo of Moscow radio station.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was arrested on Sunday shortly joining one of several rallies held in Russian cities on Sunday. "This doesn't mean anything ... you didn't come out for me, but for your future". Navalny said he planned to attend the Moscow protest later on Sunday.

"In order to take down our broadcast, the police cut out the door to the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) office, and then began to saw the door to the studio right in the middle of broadcast", he said in a Facebook post. "Watch it, it's a good example of what the Russian police has become". About forty people were detained in cities in eastern and central Russian Federation by midday Sunday in Moscow, according to OVD-Info, a monitoring group.

The website posted video footage of the police arresting one of the anchors of the newscast, but two Navalny campaign workers continued the broadcasts from an undisclosed location.

In a video message addressing his supporters following the commission's decision, Mr Navalny said: We knew this could happen, and so we have a straightforward, clear plan.

He called a day of protest on Sunday in protest at his exclusion from the race.

In Moscow and the second-largest city, St. Petersburg, officials refused permission for the rallies, and a senior police commander, Alexander Gorovoi, vowed to deal "harshly" with violators of the law.

Instead, Navalny and his supporters have turned to YouTube to get their message out, with over 43,000 people watching his live feed as of Sunday morning.

Surrounded by supporters, the 41-year-old chanted "swindlers and thieves" before being detained by police shortly afterwards at an unsanctioned gathering in the city centre amid heavy police presence.

"Putin has been in power for 18 years now", he said. Another presidential term, which would run six years, until 2024, would make him the longest-serving leader since Stalin.
