The American Red Cross is in need of blood donations because they have had to cancel drives due to the winter weather.
Winter blood shortage reaches critical level.
More than 550 blood drives were forced to cancel due to winter weather - meaning 16,500 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected this month. The cold and seasonal flu have also contributed to a low donor turnout, according to a release.
"Blood and platelet donations are now being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in", said Clifford Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. Blood donations are urgently needed now so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatments they need.
