Republicans are trying to save DACA; Democrats need to act

After Senate Democrats joined Republicans in voting to proceed to the bill Thursday night, progress stalled as lawmakers were faced with the prospect of the plan failing.

Meadows continued, arguing that the short-term spending bill would continue to hold the military hostage, and increase spending.

But President Donald Trump has roiled the negotiations and political maneuvering in Congress by sending mixed signals on a key immigration program that Democrats insist must be fixed by Congress as part of the spending bill and even on the addition of a renewal of a child health insurance program to the stopgap measure as a lure for Democratic votes.

"I think there are enough Senate Democrats like me that want to pressure but avoid a shutdown", he added.

Funding CHIP for six years is a "step in the right direction", said Fort Worth Rep. Marc Veasey, a Democrat who said he's likely to vote "no" on the measure. It does not include a solution for "dreamers", the undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, as Democrats have demanded.

"Let's make a budget deal by Friday, and let's come back to work aggressively on Monday and make a deal on DACA and responsible immigration reform", White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders said.

With those terms agreed to, and the Freedom Caucus coming onboard, the House passed its spending bill on Thursday night.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said the military is being used as a bargaining chip. Conservative Republicans and defense hawks object to yet another temporary measure and want more stable funding. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), left, chats with Senate Minority Leader Sen.

"It's really nearly like amateur hour", she told reporters at her weekly news briefing. Schumer did not say his caucus was entirely unified, but the rhetoric signaled growing chances that a stop-gap measure could come up short of votes in the Senate and federal agencies could begin closing their doors Friday at midnight.

The House Freedom Caucus staged a last-minute revolt against Speaker Paul Ryan and the rest of the House Republican leadership because the bill did not address long-term military spending.

Koreas to March Under One Flag at Olympics Opening Ceremony
Kim's words prompted the South, which sensed the chance to use the Olympics as a catalyst, to suggest talks. South Korea will pay the entire delegation's expenses, said author and Korea analyst Gordon Chang.

Supporters of the DACA program protest outside the Capitol while lawmakers struggle Thursday to avoid a partial government shutdown. Republicans hold 51 Senate seats, but two, Sens. McConnell rejected that idea. John Kennedy of Louisana and Democratic Sen.

A federal government shutdown will be an expensive, demoralizing inconvenience felt all across the nation, not just in Washington.

Already on Thursday, the White House appeared to be downplaying the impact of a possible shutdown, while at the same time preparing to lay blame on Congress if the government shuts down.

The government last shut down in October 2013 for 16 days after Sen. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Mike McCaul (R-TX), Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho) and Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), which would end green card provisions for relatives other than spouses and children, require employers to use the E-Verify system to ensure that they hire legal workers, and seek to transform our legal immigration system to one that is merit-based.

"If we can't agree, your party has the majority in the House and the Senate to pass your own funding resolution".

What is also on display with the Democrats' crass political games is their rank hypocrisy: in 2006, then-Senators Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer all voted for the Yuma Sector Wall on our border. They won't acknowledge the Democrat wave that is coming.

In addition to offering qualifying individuals the opportunity to get in line for a green card, provided they meet certain requirements, Hurd says the proposal would make that protection available to about 1.2 million eligible individuals, not merely the 750,000 participants now in the DACA program.

Trump tweeted earlier Thursday a message that was originally interpreted as disparaging of the current proposal to keep the government funded, though congressional Republicans later said the President was fully on board with that plan.
