Republicans retiring in record numbers fuel fears of losing House at midterms

"Throughout my service, I worked hard and never lost sight of the people our government is supposed to serve. Yet with the support of my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in California's 49th District", Issa said in a statement.

On Election Day, Yancey appeared to win the race by 10 votes.

Early this week, Congressman Ed Royce, chairman of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee, had also announced his retirement.

Before his announcement, it looked like Royce might be running for re-election.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said Issa's retirement "means we are in a strong position to elect a Democrat to the 49th District this fall".

And it will be particularly bad for Republicans in the next few years if Democrats take back control.

So far, 15 Republican House members and three Republican senators have announced that they will not seek re-election and plan to retire when their terms end in January 2018.

Issa has been known for introducing and pushing Congressional legislation that specifically targets Indian IT companies, especially those that use H-1B visas. Vote for me, your Republican congressman.

"This week, we got our first wins with Darrell Issa and Ed Royce stepping down rather than face crushing defeat in November".

I Am Alive And Well, El-Zakzaky Speaks Out
Members of the group recently clashed with the police when they sought to protest at the national assembly. There had been rumors surrounding his well-being, with speculations that he may have died in detention.

To be sure, Democrats also have vulnerable members retiring, and the party, unlike Republicans in 1994, have struggled to give voters an agenda to support other than opposing Trump. He (along with several of the other retiring chairmen) is term-limited as chair, and said in a statement he wants to spend his a year ago in the role focusing on "the brutal, corrupt and risky regimes in Pyongyang and Tehran, Vladimir Putin's continued efforts to weaponize information to fracture western democracies, and growing terrorist threats in Africa and Central Asia". If you're looking at a tight race like Issa was - he won re-election in 2016 by a mere 1,621 votes - you're probably asking yourself whether you're doomed and there's no point bothering to run again.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won Issa's district by about seven points and Royce's district by almost nine points during the 2016 presidential election, leading many to believe that Democrats could flip both districts this year.

"With a lot of Republican talent in North County and South Orange County, I have no doubt several well qualified candidates will emerge", the chairman of the Republican Party of San Diego County, Tony Krvaric, said on Facebook.

Kudos to the passionate and persistent #Flipthe49th volunteers who showed up week after week to protest at Darrell Issa's district office. The GOP has led the House for 18 years, dominating by 63-to-34 majority before the elections. Just over 46 percent of voters turned out, compared to 29 percent in both 2014 and 2012.

"When initially discussing the idea of running for Congress with my wife, Erika, we weighed the options of whether to run in District 49, where our business is located and where most of our friends and business contacts live, or District 50 where we reside".

Applegate was Issa's 2016 opponent.

"I wish I could tell you that I saw this coming but it took me by surprise", Democratic candidate Mike Levin said.

A record number of Republicans are leaving the House of Representatives in 2018, either to retire or to seek higher office.
