"I suffered a really bad viral infection in China 18 months ago", McIlroy said.

The Northern Irishman finished 2017 without a win - the first time he had failed to claim a tournament in a calendar year since 2008.

McIlroy, 28, who was winless during an injury-plagued season last year, said he will have to undergo an echo cardiogram every six months and then an MRI scan every year.

He didn't sound overly concerned about the condition, describing it as an "irregularity" that he needs to "stay on top of".

"The rib's fine, no problems whatsoever", he told the Daily Telegraph. "Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway".

Four-time major victor McIlroy returns to the golf course next week in the Abu Dhabi Championship after a four-month break as he recovered from a rib injury.

President Trump makes foul-mouthed oval office outburst against immigrants
The Post's report said Trump asked why the United States would need more Haitians and suggested the government "take them out". The remarks stirred criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, along with the mainstream media.

He was referring to the European Tour's Abu Dhabi Championship, where he will begin a busy schedule in the build up to April's U.S. Masters, the only major he needs to win to complete the career grand slam.

"I feel there's been a big reaction to it in the media which there really shouldn't be", McIlroy wrote in an Instagram post.

He said: "It's been 10 years that I've been a pro and to me that's incredible".

After failing to make it to the Tour Championship, McIlroy played twice more in Europe before shutting it down in early October to regroup.

"I need to get back on that track and this year my goals are to add to my major tally and get back to world No. 1, winning more times than anyone else", he told the Telegraph. "Everyone knows I haven't won one in the last three years and that is a worry, yeah".

McIlroy will return to action in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship starting Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates. "And I will give myself the best chances this season".
