Samsung's 146-inch television 'The Wall' is as big as a wall

MOST of us probably haven't even upgraded to a 4K TV yet, but the biggest names in TV technology are already working on what's coming next. But, instead of a product you can actually buy, The Wall has been made to show off Samsung's new modular screen technology, which can make displays of any size - and because movie theatres are its intended customer, 146 inches is the entry level...

At achieving this latter PR stunt, The Wall succeeds wonderfully.

There's no word yet on the availability of the modular TV in the market, but a Variety report claims Samsung plans to commercially start selling the device sometime this year.

So what exactly are these other technologies?

But Samsung's awkwardly titled, The Wall, isn't so subtle. The pixel LED modules in a MicroLED display provide their own light source, so there's no need for a separate backlight, or for color filters.

But with LCD, OLED and Samsung's own QLED TVs already on the market, what new features does MicroLED bring and should the competition be anxious?

LG OLED
The proprietary LG OLED technology is designed to deliver perfect blacks thanks to its ability to turn each pixel on or completely off

Hisense's Laser TV projector can produce a 140-inch display on a smaller budget, and will cost $US9,999 when it's released in America.

"On a wall screen, you can watch TV, designating any section or portion of the display to act like a TV", he said.

However, unlike OLED, the Micro LED tech of the gargantuan Wall TV doesn't have quite so many limitations on peak brightness. What's more, unlike OLEDs, MicroLEDs can potentially go brighter and exhibit immunity to ageing and burn in issues.

Its USP? Packing the ability to go five times brighter than the brightest TV now on the market, to give HDR footage some extra punch when it counts. For punters, this means a brighter screen, darker blacks, more realistic colors and less unwanted light leakage.

Finally, Sony was also keen to show off its 8K developments, with an as yet unnamed 8K TV. This results in a high contrast footage that is better than the traditional LCD screens.

"At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing consumers with a wide range of cutting-edge screen experiences", said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. It's not the same technology as OLED, and Samsung says it offers the ideal blacks of OLED but can get much brighter and has fewer off-axis color issues. It's not a totally brand new technology, but it's now being championed by Samsung - Apple has shown an interest too - so is expected to take off in a big way over the next few years. Expect a hefty price tag.
