Saskatchewan Party set to choose new leader, premier

Moe was elected at the party's leadership convention on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Moe won the race after five rounds of voting, beating out five rivals who sought to replace Wall, who is retiring after serving as premier for a decade.

"I will stand with your community and I will always stand with Saskatchewan and our party will always stand with Saskatchewan".

Wall praised the party for helping create a change of attitude in Saskatchewan.

"This is the new Saskatchewan", he said.

Party President James Thorsteinson says once a new leader is elected, the party will have to stay united to focus on defeating the NDP in the next provincial election.

He will take over for outgoing premier Brad Wall, who announced his retirement from politics in August.

Wall ended his speech encouraging the party to unite behind its new leader.

An investigation into a government land deal is in the hands of out-of-province prosecutors and could lead to charges.

Moe, a former provincial environment minister, has vowed to continue to fight the Liberal government plan, saying it would do nothing to reduce carbon emissions while costing Saskatchewan's economy more than C$2 billion ($1.6 billion).

With respect to marijuana, Moe has said he feels the federal government has not given provinces enough time to meet the deadline set for summer 2018.

Moe, who has served as an MLA for Rosthern-Shellbrook since 2011, announced his bid for party leadership on September 1.
