Ursula K Le Guin dies aged 88

Ursula Le Guin, who beginning in the 1960s upended the male-dominated genres of fantasy and science fiction, crafting novels that grappled with issues of gender inequality, racism and environmental destruction - while featuring magical or extraterrestrial characters whom she described as "real people" nonetheless - died January 22 at her home in Portland.

Le Guin, one of the great writers of the 20th century, passed away Tuesday at her home in Portland, Oregon.

Her verified Twitter account posted a statement saying: "The family of Ursula K. Le Guin is deeply saddened to announce her peaceful death yesterday (Monday) afternoon". She became an expert in anthropology and was influenced by anarchist and Taoist thinking, the BBc said.

On the occasion of receiving the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, Le Guin galvanized the proceedings by unleashing her ire at the inequalities perpetrated by the major mainstream publishers. When those books didn't sell, she chose to try her hand at straight-ahead science fiction, and "Rocannon's World" was released in 1966.

"Godspeed into the galaxy", Stephen King tweeted, saying Le Guin was a literary icon, not just a science fiction writer.

Still, while Le Guin deployed alien planets and impossible societies in her novels, fellow Hugo victor Mary Robinette Kowal told NPR's Petra Mayer that Le Guin's work could not be confined to a simple label found atop bookstore shelves. She had been having health issues related to her heart in recent months, he said.

She also was nominated for a Pulitzer Award in 1997. Across more than 20 novels and scores of short stories, Le Guin crafted fantastic worlds to grapple with profoundly hard questions here on Earth, from class divisions to feminist theory. She wrote often about magic, balance, and always layered in a sense of compassion to her works. You might think it unusual that I would use these terms to describe an author and her books, but truth be told, it is well deserved. "I hope you live without the need to dominate, and without the need to be dominated".

"Throughout her life she embraced new forms of technology; she was constantly pushing boundaries and barriers". She won a Fulbright fellowship to study overseas in Paris where she met her future husband, Charles Le Guin, also a Fulbright recipient.
