The majority of the U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted to confirm Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell to succeed Janet Yellen at the helm of the central bank in a move that would likely ensure continuity in U.S. monetary policy. Trump had the option of appointing her to a second term, but instead chose the 64-year-old, Princeton-trained former investment banker who was originally appointed to the Fed board 5 ½ years ago by then-President Barack Obama.

Mr Powell, who was named in November as Mr Trump's nominee, is a Republican and is seen to back low interest rates.

He was confirmed by the US Senate by an overwhelming vote of 84-12.

It was the most lopsided of recent Fed chair votes, signaling both Powell's bipartisan appeal and the gradual ebbing of some of the tensions raised by the central bank's aggressive response to the 2007-2009 financial crisis and recession.
