Shiv Sena said why should eyebrows be raised now over its decision when the allies were being sidelined by the BJP in setting its target of winning 380 plus seats in the next general elections
The resolution to part ways with the BJP and go it alone in the elections next year was tabled by Sena MP Sanjay Raut at the party's National Executive meeting and passed unanimously.
"The BJP has become arrogant after winning more seats in 2014 assembly elections, it has neglected its alliance partner in power sharing", said a senior Shiv Sena leader, who declined to be identified as the party is still in the state government. Congress is also watching how Sena's move would impact coalition reflexes of "suppressed" allies TDP and Akali Dal.
In a significant generational change, the Shiv Sena elevated 27-year-old Aaditya Thackeray, son of party president Uddhav Thackeray and now chief of Sena's youth wing Yuva Sena, to the Ashtapradhan Mandal, a group of top Shiv Sena leaders. Apart from him, there are seven leaders in the Mandal, named after a group formed by Marathi icon and 17th century ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji to run his administration. Leaders in this group are just below the party president in hierarchy. The Shiv Sena held its internal polls to elect its party President and other functionaries on Tuesday, the birth anniversary of its founder Balasaheb Thackeray.
They, however, said the BJP would not ask the Shiv Sena members in the Union and the Maharashtra Ministries to give up their posts. Aaditya's promotion has been in the pipeline for long, and the party was awaiting a grand occasion to announce it, said sources.

The Sena also passed a resolution to win "at least 25 LS seats (out of 48 in the state) and 150 assembly seats (out of 288)" in 2019. The BJP went from strength to strength, it performed even better in panchayat elections and municipal elections that took place right after the 2014 general elections going on to prove how the "wave" of 2014 had taken roots in the state. "If they (the Sena) don't want to remain with us, why wait till 2019?" a BJP senior said. This government will complete its full term.
