Khaled Ali withdraws from Egyptian presidential race
It was in a room packed with reporters on Wednesday night that the last serious challenger in the Egyptian presidential elections announced his intention to step down.
Sisi led a military coup against Egypt's first-ever democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in 2013 and was elected president the next year.
The campaign of Khaled Ali, a human rights lawyer who had hoped to run in March, recently released a clandestinely shot video of Cairo residents haggling with an unidentified man over cash payment in exchange for recommendations for el-Sissi.
Mr Ali is just the latest in a string of presidential hopefuls forced to abandon his campaign in the face of government pressure. He said his supporters were being intimidated and the electoral process was corrupt.
Khalid Dawoud, a prominent member of the Constitution party, which had shown support for Ali, said he was unsure whether it was Anan's arrest that had convinced Ali not to run, "but there was a widespread feeling that we won't be given a chance to compete".
McCain's comments a day earlier say that "over the past few years, we have witnessed Egypt lurch dangerously backwards".
Candidates must register from January 20 to 29 before a final list of candidates is announced on February 20, according to the election commission. A small crop of lesser-known challengers have announced their intention to run but it is far from certain they will garner the necessary nominations required under Egyptian law to actually run.
Seven years on, Egyptians are still in quest of a new era with millions still believing Mubarak's era was better as dissidents, outspoken journalists and right activists now live under the shackles of the al-Sisi's regime that has rolled back the democratic gains achieved after the revolution.

The army accused Anan of breaking the law by running for office without permission and his campaign was halted in its tracks.
Those who agree are transported free of charge to the local notary office, they said. "We urge the authorities in Egypt to ensure that the election campaign is conducted in a credible, inclusive, peaceful and participatory manner", United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters in NY.
"This arbitrary arrest of a potential presidential candidate shows a blatant disregard for the rights to freedom of expression and association and the right to public participation".
"It is clear that the Egyptian authorities are hell-bent on arresting and harassing anyone who stands against President Sisi".
Meanwhile, an army spokesman said Anan's announcement was meant to drive a wedge between the armed forces and the Egyptian people.
Sisi has vowed to crush Islamist militants and revive a battered economy.
The January 25 uprising that lasted for 18 days in 2011, called for democracy and an end to police brutality.
