Baby born weighing just 400 grams is 'one of the smallest ever to survive'
The doctors at Jivanta Children's Hospital in the India city of Udaipur made a decision to perform an emergency C-section on the 48-year-old Seeta, Manushi's mother, after she underwent complications during her pregnancy, including extremely low blood pressure. She's now being discharged from hospital after six months of treatment, though she still weighs a tiny 5.2lbs. The ultrasonography revealed that there is no blood flow to the foetus following which she was taken to the operation theatre. She then had to have an emergency caesarean just 28 weeks into her pregnancy. When she was born, the baby weighed just 14 ounces and measured a mere 8.6in.
Doctors say Manushi, born on June 15 at a hospital in India, is progressing well - her brain is structurally normal and her eyes are developing normally.
After her birth, Manushi was immediately put on a ventilator and transferred to Jivanta Children's Hospital NICU.
The smallest baby ever born is thought to be Emilia Grabarczyk, who was born weighing 8oz in Witten, Germany, in 2015. The doctors told her parents that she had 0.5 percent chance of surviving.
Dr Sunil Janged, chief neo-natologist added: 'When the baby was born, we were uncertain of what could happen. As she was struggling to breathe, she was shifted to the neontal intensive care unit (NICU) and put on ventilator to expand her tiny and immature lungs.

As Seeta was the only hope for her parents who came from a poor financial background and had yearned for a child for 35 years, the hospital chose to bear 75% of the cost of the treatment for the premature baby.
However, to their delight Seeta was able to digest a few drops of milk by seven weeks and started drinking a tiny amount at a time by the time she was four and a half months old. Paediatricians attending on her started with parenteral nutrition, giving all essential nutrients directly into blood circulation.
Hospital director Dr Sunil Janged added: "We chose to save the life of the baby and offer her necessary medical care and attention because we wanted to send out a message that a girl child must be protected". By her fourth month, she was able to drink from spoon.
Defying the odds of medicine, a premature baby girl named Seeta born weighing 400 grams survived and gained weight, thanks to efforts of doctors at Jivanta Children's Hospital in Udaipur and determination of her parents.
"In Rajasthan the girls [like this] are still considered a burden, and are thrown in the trash immediately after birth or are left in the orphanage".
