South Korea Hospital Blaze Kills 41 People
At least 31 people were killed and 70 more were injured when the fire broke out at Sejong Hospital in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province at about 7:30 a.m. Friday local time.
At least 177 patients - a lot of them elderly - were at the main building of the hospital and the adjacent nursing home when the fire broke out, hospital director Song Byeong Cheol told reporters. Most of those who died were on the first and second floors, said Mr Choi, but added that there were no deaths from burns.
Around 200 people were in the Sejong Hospital building when the fire broke out, police said.
The head of the foundation that operates the hospital, Son Kyung-cheol, also said in a televised briefing Friday afternoon that sprinklers were not installed in the hospital as it was not legally required.
More than two dozen people were killed after a fire erupted at a hospital in South Korea.

The hospital's director bowed in apology to the patients and victim's families during the briefing. The director of the hospital said the current law did not require the building to have a sprinkler system. Charred debris and glass littered the ground outside.
While South Korea has risen to become the world's 11th-largest economy, some of its infrastructure was built rapidly and it has a history of preventable disasters.

SEOUL-South Korean officials rushed to identify 37 victims of a hospital blaze and pinpoint the cause on Saturday as President Moon Jae-in visited the burnt-out building and decried "one tragedy after another" to strike the country.

An official from the National Forensic Service said they found some possible defective points from the wiring in the ceiling, such as short circuits and incomplete contact of wires.
For many in South Korea, Friday's blaze will bring back painful memories of 2014, when a fire at a nursing home in the southern county of, many of whom were left trapped due to their inability to escape unaided.The recent spate of deadly fires in South Korea has led to questions over the government's ability to enforce sufficient safety measures.

Interior minister Kim Boo-kyum traveled to Miryang to apologize for the fire.
He says most victims died from suffocation.
This fatal fire comes just a month after a fire in a sports center building that killed 29 people and led to criminal charges for negligence by the building's owners.
