Spain asks its top court to block Catalan leader Puigdemont's bid to become regional president again

The Spanish government on Friday asked the country's Constitutional Court to block Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont's bid to become the region's president again, Reuters reported. "Mr Torrent must have known that Mr Puigdemont could not enter Spain without being detained".

Puigdemont fled to Brussels shortly after he declared Catalonia's independence, to avoid a Spanish probe for his role in what Spain deemed to be an illegal secession bid.

Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, Spain's deputy prime minister, said the federal government would use "all the instruments of the law" to keep Puigdemont out of his old job.

But Spain's conservative central government on Friday filed a legal challenge with the country's Constitutional Court against Puigdemont's bid to return to power, on the grounds that as a fugitive of justice, he can not be elected. Torrent said he has written asking Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to meet and talk about the "abnormal situation" in Catalonia.

Willian, Morata, Courtois Out Of Newcastle United Clash; Conte Expects "Difficult" Game
The 25-year-old will miss the FA Cup clash with Newcastle on Sunday and faces a race to be fit for Bournemouth on Wednesday. There have, in fact, been seven different managers sacked since Roman Abramovich took over at Chelsea in 2003.

The Council of State declined to comment.

The Spanish government will appeal to the constitutional court by arguing that Puigdemont doesn't have "freedom to roam about", because he faces criminal charges for helping organize and rally Catalonians to secede.

The Catalan parliament must hold its first round of voting a new regional leader no later than January 31.

This will be a setback for pro-independence parties, who hold a majority in the Catalan parliament following December elections, and who have put forward Puigdemont as the only candidate to lead the region.
