Steve Bannon the former chief strategist to President Trump speaks in Warren Mich. in November. Two months later he was shunned by the president and out of a job at Breitbart News

A group of University of Chicago students and faculty gathered earlier this morning to protest the decision to invite Steve Bannon on campus to speak.

"I can hardly think of a more important issue for new citizens and business leaders of the world than the backlash against globalization and immigration that is taking place not just in America, but in all the Western World", Zingales said.

"Bannon's positions as articulated in Breitbart News and the policies he helped to promote during his tenure at the White House do not open opportunities for debate and exchange", the letter states.

Outside the Booth School of Business protesters chanted phrases "Disinvite!"

The University administration has generally not had to respond to invitations of the sort of controversial and high-profile right-wing figures who have prompted calls for disinvitation on other campuses.

He then found himself isolated after infuriating Trump by making unflattering comments about the president that were recorded in the incendiary book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", by Michael Wolff. It is our civic duty to engage them in finding the causes of this backlash and in trying to address them.

"Mr. Bannon has come to interpret and represent this backlash in America".

Tom Izzo again says Michigan State basketball will 'cooperate with any investigation'
But Izzo , typically in a jaunty mood after a win, was in no mood for levity. "And I hope we'll rally around people that need us". We've had a little adversity. "A lot of things could have happened, but we found a way to stick together and fight through this".

I don't expect a current U. of C. freshman to jump up and exclaim, "I am not a white nationalist", if Bannon's xenophobia begins to show during the debate. Hate can not be defeated by hate, but only by reason. Professor Zingales has the right to invite Bannon to speak, but he should have known better.

The date of the event has not yet been set. A professor at Chicago's business school invited Steve Bannon, formerly a top aide in the Trump administration and the executive chairman of Breitbart, to appear on campus, and Bannon has accepted.

About 100 people came to a student-organized demonstration outside the Booth School this morning, according to the Maroon.

When asked about whether there was some value to having Bannon speak at the University, the student said Bannon's views were not welcomed.

The University of Chicago released a statement saying it supported Zingales's right to invite Bannon and detractors' right to protest, "as part of our commitment to free expression".

More recently, during the 2016 election campaign, he published op-eds in the Chicago Tribune and The New York Times calling then-candidate Donald Trump a crony capitalist and comparing him to Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian billionaire who served as Prime Minister of Italy for almost a decade. And Trump's former spokesman Sean Spicer spoke on campus previous year. His presence on campus sends a chilling message not only to students, staff and faculty at the University, but also to the young people who attend the University of Chicago Charter School and Laboratory School and to the primarily black neighbors who surround the university.
