Steve Bannon set to appear before US House probe into Russian Federation collusion

The special counsel's office has used subpoenas before to seek information on Mr. Trump's associates and their possible ties to Russian Federation or other foreign governments.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday that the White House was not concerned with what Bannon might say to Congress or special counsel Robert Mueller's team.

Insiders in Washington believe the subpoena may also be a negotiating tactic to convince him to sit down and talk face-to-face with Mueller.

Mr. Mueller is likely to allow Mr. Bannon to forgo the grand jury appearance if he agrees to instead be questioned by investigators in the less formal setting of the special counsel's offices about ties between Mr. Trump's associates and Russian Federation and about the president's conduct in office, according to the person, who would not be named discussing the case.

Bannon's attorney told the committee that Bannon would answer questions when he goes to the special counsel because executive privilege would not apply, according to a source who's familiar with the process with Bannon.

On Wednesday, the AP also confirmed that Bannon will meet with Mueller's investigators for an interview instead of appearing before a grand jury.

On Tuesday, Steve Bannon will face members of the House Intelligence Committee probing allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has sent a letter of condolences to Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev . It also said investigators had ruled out "criminal activity" or a road accident as a cause of the fire.

In the Tuesday hearing, Bannon refused to answer questions and disclose communications with key officials, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, and he would not discuss what information he may have leaked to the news media, according to Schiff. But she did not say whether the White House directed Bannon not to answer certain questions. A senior administration official insisted that the White House had not told Mr. Bannon to exert executive privilege.

It also comes on the heels of a public rift between Mr Bannon and the President, after the former strategist criticised the Trump administration to the author of a tell-all book on the White House. Mr Bannon was forced out of his job leading Breitbart News, the nationalist website, last week after an abrupt decline in his relationship with the president.

President Donald Trump publicly criticized Bannon for his comments, saying the former strategist had "lost his mind". "Testifying before a grand jury is intimidating". A grand jury testimony is usually more taxing for the witness, as the entire proceedings are transcribed and the witness is required to answer every question.

"Well, all I can say is that the folks that are giving legal advice to the President and others have their reasons for doing what they are", Collins said.

He even refused to hire a lawyer as the probe focused on Trump's inner circle, including Kushner, but last week reportedly reneged and is being represented by William Burck. Lawmakers wanted answers from him about President Trump's thinking when he fired FBI Director James Comey.

He returned to his perch atop Breitbart News but left the site in the wake of Wolff's book and Trump's rebuke.

"He's quoted in "Fire and Fury" calling Trump's son, Don Jr., 'treasonous", and "unpatriotic" for taking a meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised dirt on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
